American Sign Language (ASL)

American Sign Language (ASL)

Fast Facts

  • There's no single sign language used by Deaf people everywhere - over 300 different sign languages have developed around the world, each with its own unique grammar and signs!
  • Deaf culture includes much more than sign language. It includes shared traditions, experiences, stories, art, and ways of connecting within the Deaf community.
  • ASL has a rich history. The language developed over many years and was strongly influenced by French Sign Language.
  • Facial expressions are important in ASL. A raised eyebrow, smile, or change in expression can help show meaning or emotion.

September is celebrated as Deaf Awareness Month, making it a great time to learn about American Sign Language, or ASL! ASL is a language used by many Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in the United States and parts of Canada. Instead of sounds, ASL uses handshapes, movement, facial expressions, and even the space around your body to share ideas and feelings. One of the most famous ASL signs is the “I love you” sign. To make it, hold up your thumb, index finger, and pinky while keeping your middle and ring fingers folded down. This special handshape combines the letters I, L, and Y from the American manual alphabet. The sign can be used to say “I love you” to family, friends, or someone special without saying a word. Learning ASL is a fun way to communicate, show kindness, and connect with others while celebrating Deaf culture and community!
